THE ASSOCIATION OF PAEDIATRIC CHARTERED PHYSIOTHERAPISTS
APCP had its early roots in Birmingham. Forward thinking paediatric physiotherapists led by Ann Mark and Mary Hazelwood put forward a proposal to form an association, with objectives from the very beginning to provide a forum for physiotherapists working with children, to share ideas, stimulate the availability of appropriate training, and to gain recognition as a specific interest group within the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.
An inaugural meeting was held at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London and the response was overwhelming, and clearly demonstrated the need for such needs to be met with enormous support for things to start immediately. Moyna Gilberstone was elected as the first chairman, and assissted by a committee drawn from all regions of the UK. This group formulated a constitution, helped by outside experts - of whom some were paediatricians, hospital administrators and most importantly a parent.
Inevitably the constitution has been changed over the years, but this demonstrates the flourishing nature of APCP. The original aims remain and continue to be actively pursued. Contacts with the Chartered Society remain strong. Throughout the years membership has grown to well over 1600 plus and the National Committee continues to be built from representatives throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Today's journal has grown from early news letters and APCP goes from strength to strength supporting the advance of continuing professional development, research, the ever increasing need to network, and providing an information service for therapists and other interested parties among many other things that its members demand of it.
